Frequently Asked Questions

LH or HH, which airway adapter set should I order?

Masimo's directions for use define it plainly: LH collects water and is for short term applications with low humidity; HH removes aspirated and condensed water and is for long term applications with high humidity. It describes the duty cycle and the gas you are sampling, not the climate of the room. Item 3814 is the LH adult/pediatric set. The HH equivalent is 3827.1

Does 3814 plug straight into the analyzer, or do I need the 3800 adapter?

Straight in. Masimo splits the range into two groups. Group 1 lines, 3801 through 3813 and 4368, connect through the NomoLine HH Multi-Patient Use Adapter 3800. Group 2 lines, 3814 through 3839 plus 4367 and 4369, are intended to connect directly to the ISA gas inlet connector. 3814 is Group 2, so nothing goes in between.1

Is this the right part for a ZOLL Zenix, and what else does it fit?

Yes. ZOLL's own webstore sells this set as item 8000-010115 against REF 3814, listed under Zenix,2 and the Zenix operator's guide instructs users to use only Masimo CO2 sampling lines.3 It also fits Masimo ISA gas analyzers and the platforms built on them, including Rad-97, Root, and Radical-7.9 Confirm against your device manual before standardizing.

Where exactly does the airway adapter go in the circuit?

Masimo says connect the small diameter end to the Y-piece of the ventilation source and the large diameter end to the endotracheal tube.1 ZOLL is more specific: put it between the elbow and the ventilator circuit wye, not between the ET tube and the elbow, because that lets secretions collect in the adapter. Keep the sampling tube exiting the top, and verify a proper waveform afterward to confirm the circuit is intact.3

Can I use this on an infant, and what is the dead space?

No. The adult/pediatric adapter adds 6 mL of dead space to the circuit, and both Masimo and ZOLL state it must not be used on infants or neonates for that reason. The infant and neonatal set is a separate part, 4367, at 0.7 mL, and it must not be run the other way on adults or pediatrics because it can cause excessive flow resistance.1,3

What do I do during nebulized medication or suctioning?

Remove the sampling line connector from the monitor during nebulization or suction on an intubated patient, so moisture does not build up and occlude the line.3 Do not run inhalers or nebulized medications through the set, because it can clog the bacteria filter.1 With a closed suction system, do not place the adapter between the suction catheter and the ET tube.3

What does a blinking red light at the gas inlet mean, and does this need calibration?

On the Masimo gas inlet, steady green means monitoring is running, blinking green means zeroing, steady red is a sensor error, and blinking red means check the sampling line for a possible occlusion.3 Replace the line whenever an occlusion alarm fires.1 The spectrometer needs no regular gas zeroing; it takes a room air reference when the line is disconnected.3

Is it single use, and can it be cleaned or sterilized?

Single patient use, and no. Masimo instructs that the line not be submerged in any cleaning solution or sterilized by autoclave, irradiation, steam, gas, ethylene oxide, or any other method, and not re-used because of cross contamination risk. Replace for each new patient with a maximum of 14 days of use, with Masimo's own caveat that lifetime depends on the application and product type. Not made with natural rubber latex.1
