Temp Stick PRO with NIST Certification
Which Temp Stick to Use:
Pacific Biomedical lists three Temp Stick sensors. They are not the same part. This page is the open metal probe.
- Temp Stick WiFi sensor, PB-TEMPSTICK. Air temperature and humidity only. No NIST certificate, no probe, and no glycol bottle. Use it in a medication bag, a cabinet, or a room where the air reading is what you need. It runs on two AA batteries and does not alert on a power outage.
- Temp Stick PRO NIST sensor with buffer bottle, TEMPSTICK-PRO-RX-NIST. The sensor and the glycol bottle together. NIST certificate included. The bottle probe reads -55 F to 140 F and follows the liquid, so a door opening moves the reading less than an air sensor does. Use it in a Helmer refrigerator or in a freezer that holds blood products, blood-product storage accessories, or other sensitive medications or fluids inside that range. It does not cover an ultra-low freezer at about -80 C. The AC adapter and 6 ft power cable are included, along with two AA batteries.
- Temp Stick PRO with NIST, TEMPSTICK-PRO-NIST. This page. The sensor and an open T-type metal probe. NIST certificate included. The probe reads -238 F to 500 F. Use it when the point you need is outside the bottle range, or when the procedure calls for a metal tip. The AC adapter is included. This listing does not include the glycol bottle.
Pacific Biomedical does not list the Temp Stick +Power model, the classic sensor with a NIST certificate, or the +Power NIST model. Those are different manufacturer parts.
Temp Stick PRO Highlights:
- WiFi temperature monitor with a NIST calibration certificate, part TEMPSTICK-PRO-NIST.
- Probe range on the product page: -238 F to 500 F (-150 C to 260 C), accuracy ±0.5 C.
- Ambient range: -40 F to 140 F (-40 C to 60 C), accuracy ±0.15 C. Humidity 0 to 100 percent RH, accuracy ±3.0 percent RH.
- The 6.5 ft probe can sit in a refrigerator or freezer while the sensor stays outside, where the WiFi signal is stronger.
- Alerts for temperature, humidity, probe temperature, heat index, dew point, low battery, WiFi loss, and power loss. Methods are text message, email, and the app.
- Runs on two AA batteries or the included AC adapter. On AC power, it switches to the batteries if power drops, and it can alert on the outage and the recovery.
- Battery life is stated as more than a year at typical settings. No Ethernet port. WiFi only, 2.4 GHz.
- Black. Three-year limited warranty.
Medication Temperature Monitoring for CAMTS and CAAS:
A transport program can use this sensor as the recorder inside a medication-temperature policy. Buying the sensor does not accredit the service.
CAMTS standards for medical transport, in the 2023 Special Operations and Medical Retrieval edition, say storage of medications must allow protection from extreme temperature changes when the environment requires it. If a refrigerator for medications is on the vehicle, those standards require a temperature monitoring and tracking policy, and the refrigerator is to be used and labeled for medication use only. When a service stores blood products, the same standards call for continuous refrigerator temperature readings, an audible alarm if the temperature leaves range, daily checks of the monitoring equipment, and a written procedure for an out-of-range temperature.
The Temp Stick PRO records the probe temperature and sends text, email, and app alerts. A program can use that record in the monitoring policy. The sensor does not replace the daily check, the written procedure, or an audible alarm when the standard asks for one. Those alerts are phone, email, and app messages.
For ground ambulance accreditation, the American Ambulance Association points services to CAAS standard 203.03.04. That standard, as the Association describes it, calls for a policy on storing medications and IV fluids so they are protected from extreme temperature changes, and a procedure for what to do if they are exposed. The Association names temperature and time monitoring as one practical measure in that policy, along with stock rotation, shaded or climate-controlled parking, and insulated storage. This sensor is one way to log the temperature at the probe and to notify people when a limit is crossed.

Questions:
What is the Temp Stick PRO with NIST?
It is the Pacific Biomedical Temp Stick PRO, part TEMPSTICK-PRO-NIST. It is a WiFi sensor that reads ambient temperature and humidity and an external probe temperature. A NIST calibration certificate from an ISO 17025 accredited laboratory is included. Pacific Biomedical supplies it for medication and equipment temperature monitoring.
Is there a subscription fee?
The Temp Stick product page states that unlimited data logging and the text, email, and app alerts stay free for the life of the sensor. You pay for the sensor. Accounts can hold more than one sensor. Re-certification of an existing sensor is a separate manufacturer service, not a monitoring subscription.
Does the Temp Stick PRO work in a freezer?
The sensor body is rated from -40 F to 140 F. The included probe is rated from -238 F to 500 F. The Temp Stick product page recommends placing the probe inside the freezer and leaving the sensor outside, using the 6.5 ft cable, so the WiFi radio is not inside the metal cabinet. For cold at the sensor itself, the manufacturer recommends Energizer Ultimate Lithium AA batteries, which it says work down to -40 F. Alkaline batteries can quit in extreme cold.
Does it use 5 GHz WiFi or Ethernet?
No. The Temp Stick connects only to 2.4 GHz WiFi. There is no Ethernet port. It can join a mobile hotspot. The Temp Stick instructions warn that an iPhone or iPad hotspot often shuts off after a short idle period, so that hotspot is a poor long-term source.
How accurate is the Temp Stick PRO?
On the TEMPSTICK-PRO-NIST product page, ambient temperature accuracy is ±0.15 C and humidity accuracy is ±3.0 percent RH. The included T-type probe accuracy is ±0.5 C. The common-questions page lists a separate K-type probe at ±1.1 F. The sensor also reports heat index and dew point from the ambient readings.
What does the NIST certificate mean, and can I still offset the reading?
The sensor ships factory calibrated, with a NIST calibration certificate for that certification option. The certificate is not a field adjustment. In the account, an offset can be added to probe temperature, ambient temperature, or humidity so the display matches another instrument. Alerts use the offset reading. The Temp Stick product page says an offset is only for the rare case where you need that match. The certificate pictured on this page is a sample layout. The dates and measured points on that sample are not the certificate for the sensor you receive.
Why might the first readings look wrong?
The PRO setup guide says the first readings can be off by about 10 degrees until the first-hour calibration finishes. The sensor calibrates during that first hour. After that, readings follow the published accuracy.
Is this the glycol buffer bottle used for vaccine refrigerators?
No. This part is the sensor with the open T-type metal probe and a NIST certificate, TEMPSTICK-PRO-NIST. It does not include the glycol bottle. Use this probe when the reading is outside -55 F to 140 F, or when the procedure calls for a metal tip. The sensor-and-bottle model, TEMPSTICK-PRO-RX-NIST, is the one for a Helmer refrigerator or a freezer holding blood products, accessories, or sensitive medications or fluids inside the bottle range.
Does it have an audible alarm?
Alerts leave the sensor by text message, email, and the app. The product page does not describe a siren on the sensor. A CAMTS blood-storage policy that requires an audible alarm still needs that alarm. This sensor can be the continuous recorder and the remote alert beside that requirement.
Can this support a CAMTS medication refrigerator policy?
CAMTS medical-transport standards require a temperature monitoring and tracking policy when a medication refrigerator is on the vehicle, and they require protection of medications from extreme temperatures when the environment makes that necessary. This sensor can take the probe reading and send the alert inside that policy. It does not accredit the program, and it does not replace the label "for med use only," the daily check, or the out-of-range procedure.
Can this support CAAS ambulance medication storage?
CAAS standard 203.03.04, as described by the American Ambulance Association, requires a policy that protects medications and IV fluids from extreme temperature changes, and a procedure if they are exposed. Temperature and time monitoring is one practical measure the Association names. A service can place this probe with the medications or in the refrigerator and keep the log. The policy, the response to an excursion, and the rest of the standard remain the service's work.
What happens when WiFi or AC power fails?
If WiFi drops, the sensor keeps logging and uploads when the connection returns. You can turn on an alert for the loss and the return. On the included AC adapter, a power cut moves the sensor to its AA batteries, and you can alert on the outage and the recovery. The stated WiFi range is 300 to 400 ft with a clear path. A freezer wall, a safe, or a building floor shortens that path. A WiFi extender is the manufacturer's suggestion when the signal is weak.
Can I download the temperature history?
Yes. The Temp Stick product page says the history can be exported as a CSV file, and temperature and humidity reports can be emailed daily, weekly, or monthly. Alert schedules can arm and disarm alerts. The anti-false-alarm setting is meant to skip alerts during brief high-traffic periods. The manufacturer also documents a public API in the account.
