Frequently Asked Questions:
Does JollyPop fit with CPAP and nasal cannulas?
Yes. JollyPop has a low, curved profile designed to fit with CPAP, nasal cannulas and side-lying positioning without cutting or modification.1 SandBox Medical notes that cutting down a pacifier violates product safety requirements and can cause injury or infection.3
Which JollyPop size is right for my patients?
Micro-Preemie is for babies born before the 26th week of pregnancy or under 28 ounces (700 to 800 grams), for hospital use.5 Preemie has a smaller nipple and a tab-style handle for premature babies. Newborn has a loop handle with nubs for babies without teeth, about 0 to 3 months, and is the size recommended for most preemies going home.12 SandBox Medical also makes a Plus+ size with a more durable nipple for babies beginning to teethe; ask us if you need it.2
Is there a vanilla scented version?
Yes. SandBox Medical makes vanilla scented JollyPop in several sizes and colors; the only difference is a light vanilla scent.23 Pacific Biomedical lists the Newborn orange vanilla scented JollyPop (JP1323100).
Is JollyPop ready to use, and how is it cleaned?
Yes. JollyPops are packaged clean and ready to use.1 To clean, wash in hot water with mild detergent and rinse. To sanitize, boil for 2 minutes and let cool, or use the top rack of a dishwasher or a home sterilizer.1 SandBox Medical states a single hospital autoclave cycle (12 to 20 minutes at 121 C) does not affect the pacifier, but repeated sterilization is not recommended.2
What is JollyPop made of?
100 percent medical grade silicone in one piece. JollyPop is phthalate-free, latex-free, BPA-free and DEHP-free, and is made in the USA.3
How often should a JollyPop be replaced?
Replace after 3 months of use, or sooner at the first sign of damage or weakness. Inspect before each use by pulling the pacifier in all directions and checking for tears or cracks.21
What safety warnings apply?
Never tie a pacifier around a baby's neck. Do not cut or modify the pacifier. Never attach anything to the rim or block the shield holes; a clip may be attached to the loop handle only. Stop using it if the baby can fit the whole pacifier in the mouth, and always use it under adult supervision.12 JollyPop is not a teether.1
What makes this a hospital-grade pacifier?
There is no single official hospital-grade label for pacifiers. NICUs and nurseries usually look for one-piece medical grade silicone, latex-free and BPA-free materials, the U.S. pacifier standard 16 CFR 1511, clean individual packaging and true NICU sizes. JollyPop Newborn meets each of these points.31
Who designed JollyPop?
JollyPop was designed by Read McCarty, founder of SandBox Medical, to give babies a soft pacifier that works with tubes and cannulas without cutting. McCarty also designed earlier hospital pacifiers used in U.S. NICUs. JollyPop is protected by US Patent D691277S.4 SandBox Medical is now owned and operated by CHS USA Inc.
How many pacifiers are in a box?
100. Each box holds 100 JollyPop pacifiers of one size, color and scent, and each pacifier is in its own poly bag.3 Pacific Biomedical sells this item by the box.
Why do hospitals switch to JollyPop?
In a SandBox Medical nursing evaluation at 117 U.S. hospitals, with 1001 nurse evaluations, 97.6 percent of responding nurses approved switching from their current pacifier brand.6
