Is the SAM XT a C-A-T tourniquet?
The SAM XT is SAM Medical's extremity tourniquet. This page is the tactical black polymer-windlass part XT700-BK-EN. The Combat Application Tourniquet, also searched as CAT or C-A-T, is a different windlass tourniquet from a different manufacturer. Both are windlass limb tourniquets. The SAM XT takes slack out with the TRUFORCE buckle, then the windlass is twisted until bleeding stops.1
How far above the wound do you place a tourniquet, and what does high and tight mean?
The SAM XT IFU says to place it on the skin 2 to 3 inches (5 to 7 cm) above the wound. If the injury site is not easily seen, place the SAM XT as high and tight as possible on the injured arm or leg. Do not place it over solid objects in the clothing.1
How many times do you twist the windlass?
The SAM XT IFU does not give a turn count. Pull the strap hard and steady until the buckle stops, twist the polymer windlass until bleeding has stopped, seat the rod in the C-hooks, and write the time on the Time Band. If bleeding continues, twist further. If it still continues, place a second SAM XT side by side with the first.1
Can this tourniquet go over clothing?
Apply the SAM XT directly on the skin when you can see the wound. It must not be applied over solid objects in the clothing. When the wound is not easily seen, the IFU directs a high and tight placement on the injured limb.1
Is the XT700 the CoTCCC-recommended SAM tourniquet?

How long can the SAM XT stay on, and can it be reused?
Leave the SAM XT in place until a medical practitioner directs removal or repositioning. It is single use. SAM Medical lists pain and skin, muscle, vessel, or nerve damage as undesirable effects, and lists rhabdomyolysis, fasciotomy, or amputation when application runs longer than 4 hours.1
