Frequently Asked Questions:
What is a click-style oxygen regulator?
It is a cylinder regulator with a set of fixed flow settings. The Gentec 284MA-15LY1 is a piston design click-style regulator with 12 settings from 0 to 15 LPM shown in a flow rate window, and a 50 psi delivery pressure.1
What flow rates does this oxygen regulator have?
0, 0.5, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10 and 15 LPM.1 For flows above 15 LPM, Gentec offers the 284MA-25LY1, which tops out at 25 LPM.1
What is the DISS outlet on an oxygen regulator for?
The 284MA-15LY1 has one DISS outlet that delivers oxygen at 50 psi, alongside the hose barb.1 Gentec calls this a DISS power take off outlet on its click-style regulators, and it supplies equipment with a DISS oxygen connection from the same cylinder.1 Models with a -15LY2 suffix have two DISS outlets, and models without the 1 or 2 suffix have none.1 On the 284MA-15LY1 the DISS outlet is the threaded male fitting below the gauge, and a female DISS oxygen fitting such as the Precision Medical 0124 adapter threads onto it.
What oxygen tank does a CGA 870 regulator fit?
Medical oxygen cylinders with a CGA 870 yoke valve, such as size E medical oxygen cylinders.2 The 284MA-15LY1 has a CGA 870 yoke inlet and is for oxygen only.1 For CGA 540 cylinder valves, Gentec makes the 284MA-15L1, and the medical air version of this regulator is the 287MA-15LY1 with a CGA 950 inlet.1
How do you put an oxygen regulator on an E tank?
Check that one yoke seal washer is in place and in good condition on the regulator inlet, slide the yoke over the cylinder post valve, seat the index pins in the valve holes without forcing them, and hand tighten the T-handle screw into the dimple on the valve.3 Turn the flow setting to 0, stand with the cylinder between you and the regulator, open the cylinder valve slowly, and confirm pressure on the gauge.3
How long does an E tank last?
Duration in minutes equals cylinder pressure in psig times the cylinder factor, divided by flow in LPM; the E cylinder factor is 0.28, and planning to change the cylinder at about 500 psig gives a safer estimate.4 At a gauge reading of 2,000 psig with a 500 psig reserve, an E cylinder provides about:
| Flow setting | Approximate time |
|---|---|
| 1 LPM | 420 min |
| 2 LPM | 210 min |
| 3 LPM | 140 min |
| 4 LPM | 105 min |
| 5 LPM | 84 min |
| 6 LPM | 70 min |
| 8 LPM | 53 min |
| 10 LPM | 42 min |
| 15 LPM | 28 min |
These are calculated from the formula above; use your own gauge reading and protocol.4
How do you check how much oxygen is left in the tank?
Read the contents gauge. The 284MA-15LY1 has a 1-1/2 in UL-listed gauge reading to 3000 psi, the regulator's maximum inlet pressure.1 A cylinder approaching 500 psig is near the point where it should be replaced.4
Why is my oxygen regulator leaking at the tank?
For a leak between the regulator and the cylinder, close the cylinder valve and vent the regulator before adjusting anything, never tighten fittings under pressure, then inspect or replace the yoke washer and reattach.3 Use only one yoke seal washer, replace it every 6 months or after a leak, and check connections with an oxygen-compatible leak test solution.3
What connects to the hose barb outlet?
Oxygen tubing for a cannula, mask or other oxygen delivery device. The hose barb carries the selected click flow from 0.5 to 15 LPM.1
Is this a genuine Gentec regulator?
Yes. This is the new Gentec 284MA-15LY1 click-style oxygen regulator; Gentec is the medical product brand of Genstar Technologies Inc.1 Pacific Biomedical supplies it new.
