ADC Adtemp 424N Tympanic Ear Thermometer, 1-Second IR (424N)
The ADC Adtemp 424N (item 424N) is a professional tympanic (ear) infrared thermometer that displays a body temperature in about one second, with a color-coded backlit LCD that turns red at or above 99.5 F to flag a possible fever. Made by American Diagnostic Corporation, it recalls the last 30 time-stamped readings, switches between Fahrenheit and Celsius, and ships with a storage cradle, a built-in cover dispenser, and 20 disposable, latex-free probe covers. Pacific Biomedical supplies it as a genuine ADC device for EMS, clinic, urgent care, and hospital patient assessment.
Product Highlights
- Fast one-second infrared reading at the ear, non-invasive and well tolerated by patients who cannot hold an oral probe.
- Color-coded backlit LCD shows green for normal readings and turns red at or above 99.5 F, giving a quick visual fever flag during triage.
- Stores the last 30 time-stamped readings, so a trend can be reviewed and documented on the chart or run sheet.
- Switchable Fahrenheit and Celsius display with auto shutoff, running about 2000 measurements on two AAA batteries.
- Disposable, latex-free probe covers help reduce cross-contamination between patients, with a dispenser and 20 covers included.
- Meets EN ISO 80601-2-56 for clinical thermometer performance and is backed by a 2-year warranty.
Temperature Assessment in the Field and Clinic
Temperature is an easily overlooked vital sign, yet it sharpens field and triage decisions. Read alongside heart rate and respiratory rate, an elevated temperature helps flag possible sepsis, while low readings can point to environmental hypothermia, so capturing it completes the clinical picture.1
Tympanic infrared thermometry is fast, non-invasive, and hygienic, but like other peripheral methods it estimates rather than directly measures core temperature. A systematic review and meta-analysis of 75 studies found peripheral thermometers, including tympanic, fall outside a clinically acceptable range against central measurement and detect fever with limited sensitivity.2 An emergency department study likewise found tympanic readings can under or over estimate rectal temperature.3 A normal ear reading therefore does not rule out fever.
Good technique improves reliability. Use a fresh probe cover for every patient, position the probe as directed, and correlate the reading with the clinical picture and your local protocol. Per the manufacturer's Instructions for Use, the 424N is intended for the intermittent measurement of human body temperature and does not replace clinical judgment.
