ADC Adscope 604 Pediatric Stethoscope, 29.5 in, Light Blue (604LB)

SKU: ADC-604LB

The ADC Adscope 604 (item 604LB, light blue) is a pediatric clinician stethoscope built around a combination chestpiece machined from surgical stainless steel, sized for small patients: a 1 3/8 inch diaphragm and a 1 1/8 inch bell that sit flat on a child's chest wall instead of bridging ribs. Made by American Diagnostic Corporation, it uses ADC's AFD Technology so the diaphragm side can be tuned from low to high frequency by changing hand pressure, and it carries a lifetime warranty on all parts. Pacific Biomedical supplies it as a genuine ADC instrument for EMS, pediatrics, school health, urgent care, and hospital patient assessment.

Product Highlights

  • Pediatric combination chestpiece machined from surgical stainless steel, with a 1 3/8 inch diaphragm and a 1 1/8 inch bell scaled to a small chest wall.
  • ADC's AFD Technology (Adjustable Frequency Design) lets you shift the diaphragm from low-frequency to high-frequency response with hand pressure, so you can stay on one side of the chestpiece through most of an exam.
  • Non-chill retaining rims on both the bell and the diaphragm, which matters when the patient is a child who will react to a cold instrument.
  • 22 inch PVC tubing, phthalate-free since 2014, on stainless steel binaurals angled at 15 degrees with a molded reinforcing Y-yoke at the split.
  • Adsoft Plus silicone snap-on eartips fitted, plus two spare pairs in the box, so a worn or lost tip does not take the scope out of service.
  • Light, at 4.6 oz (131 g), and 29.5 inches overall, which keeps it comfortable around the neck across a full shift.
  • Lifetime warranty on all parts from American Diagnostic Corporation, and not made with natural rubber latex.

Choosing and Using a Pediatric Chestpiece

A pediatric chestpiece is smaller so it can seal against a small chest. On an infant or young child an adult-sized diaphragm tends to span ribs and intercostal spaces rather than sit flat, and any gap lets ambient noise in. Pediatric chestpieces are sized down for exactly that reason.1 The 604 pairs a 1 3/8 inch diaphragm with a 1 1/8 inch bell.

Bell and diaphragm are not interchangeable. Acoustic bench testing of six widely used stethoscopes found that, for a given instrument, the bell and the diaphragm usually have different transmission characteristics, most noticeably at low frequencies.2 In practice the diaphragm favors higher-frequency sounds such as breath sounds and normal heart tones, while the bell favors low-frequency sounds such as some murmurs and bruits.1

One widely repeated belief is worth correcting: the bell was not designed for pediatric patients. Its purpose is low-frequency listening, and the fact that a smaller bell also fits a small chest is a convenience, not the design intent.3 That distinction is why a purpose-built pediatric chestpiece, rather than the bell side of an adult scope, is the better answer for small patients. Per the manufacturer's instructions for use, the Adscope 604 is an acoustic instrument for auscultation and does not replace clinical judgment or your agency's protocols.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size stethoscope do I need for a pediatric patient?
Use a chestpiece scaled to the patient's chest, not an adult one. The Adscope 604 is ADC's pediatric size, with a 1 3/8 inch diaphragm and a 1 1/8 inch bell. An adult diaphragm on a small child tends to bridge ribs and intercostal spaces instead of sealing flat, and the gap lets room noise into the sound path. For neonates and very small infants, ADC's 603 infant chestpiece is the smaller step down.
What is the difference between a pediatric and an adult stethoscope?
The difference is chestpiece diameter, not sound quality. A pediatric chestpiece is smaller so it seals against a small chest wall, while the tubing, binaurals, and eartips are the same clinician-grade parts you would find on the adult model. The Adscope 604 uses the same machined stainless steel construction, AFD tuning, and lifetime parts warranty as ADC's adult Adscope line.
Do I use the bell or the diaphragm on a child?
Use the diaphragm for breath sounds and normal heart tones, and the bell for low-frequency findings such as some murmurs and bruits. The bell was not designed for pediatric use, despite a common belief; its purpose is low-frequency listening. On the 604, AFD Technology also lets you pull low-frequency response out of the diaphragm side by easing hand pressure, so you can often stay on one side through an exam.
What is included with the Adscope 604, and can I get replacement parts?
Each 604 ships with fitted Adsoft Plus silicone eartips, two spare pairs, a Scope ID tag, and an accessory pouch. Replacement parts are stocked by item number: 604-01BK diaphragm, 614-03 tubing, 604-04BK chestpiece parts, 603-05BK, 602-078BK1Q eartips, and 697BK Scope ID tags. All parts are covered by ADC's lifetime warranty, so a worn diaphragm or tubing does not retire the instrument.
How long is the Adscope 604 and what does it weigh?
American Diagnostic Corporation lists the 604 at 29.5 inches overall with 22 inches of PVC tubing, weighing 4.6 oz (131 g). Some resellers publish 30.5 inches with 21 inches of tubing; where sources disagree, Pacific Biomedical uses the manufacturer's figures. The tubing has been phthalate-free since 2014 and the instrument is not made with natural rubber latex.
What colors does the Adscope 604 come in?
ADC builds the 604 in six colors: 604BK black, 604G gray, 604LB light blue, 604MCA caribbean, 604MRS raspberry, and 604P pink. This listing is 604LB, light blue. The color is cosmetic only; every 604 shares the same stainless steel pediatric chestpiece, AFD tuning, and lifetime parts warranty. Contact us if you need a different color or a quantity in mixed colors.
