Frequently Asked Questions:

Where do you place a needle decompression or chest tube with ThoraSite?

ThoraSite is built for a lateral site. The axilla hook goes into the armpit so the device sits between the anterior axillary line and the midaxillary line, and the arrow aligns with the anterior iliac crest. The Safe Zone Window then lies over the 3rd, 4th, or 5th intercostal space.1

Is ThoraSite a decompression needle?

ThoraSite is the landmark guide. The needle or chest tube is a separate device. SAM Medical states the guide is compatible with thoracostomy devices and is sized to fit in an IFAK.1

Can ThoraSite be used for an anterior or midclavicular approach?

SAM Medical limits ThoraSite to lateral thoracostomy. It is not the guide for an anterior or midclavicular site.2

Does one ThoraSite work on the left and the right?

Yes. One device is printed for the patient's left side and the patient's right side.2

Can ThoraSite be used on a child?

SAM Medical intends ThoraSite for adult and adolescent patients. It is not for pediatric or neonatal patients.2

Is ThoraSite sterile, and can it be reused?

ThoraSite is non-sterile and single use. SAM Medical also states the material is compatible with X-ray imaging.12

What did the placement study show?

In a 2019 cadaver study, two operators using ThoraSite placed 24 needles. All 24 were in the 3rd, 4th, or 5th intercostal space, and 23 of 24 met the study's lateral-window definition.3

Which NSN goes with ThoraSite?

NSN 6515-01-694-8359 is printed on the 5-pack, part TS200-5P-EN. The 25-pack is TS200-25P-EN.1
