MedSource IV Guard Site Protector, 100/Box
The MedSource IV Guard (item MS-11101) is a sterile, single use IV catheter dressing that covers and protects a peripheral vascular access site. It is built as a waterproof bio-film and foam dressing: an absorbent pad seats over the insertion point, a foam border spreads the load across the skin, and a heavy adhesive holds the dressing through normal daily activity rather than confining the patient to a chair. Every package also contains extra foam strips that can be used to secure IV tubing or as a labeling surface. Manufactured for MedSource Labs, LLC of Chanhassen, Minnesota, the IV Guard is sterilized with ethylene oxide, is not made with natural rubber latex, and is supplied 100 dressings per box. What the Guidelines Say About Catheter Site Dressings
A catheter site dressing has one job: keep the insertion site covered and the catheter stable. The CDC's guidelines for the prevention of intravascular catheter-related infections direct clinicians to use either sterile gauze or a sterile, transparent, semipermeable dressing to cover the catheter site, a Category IA recommendation, and to replace the dressing whenever it becomes damp, loosened, or visibly soiled, a Category IB recommendation.1
Peripheral IV failure is common, which is why securement gets attention. A pragmatic randomized trial of 1807 adult patients compared four dressing and securement methods and found catheter failure in 38 to 43 percent of patients, with no method proving superior to the others.2 A separate randomized trial reported that peripheral catheter failure before treatment completion occurs in 33 to 69 percent of patients, with partial dislodgement and accidental removal among the causes.3 Pacific Biomedical does not claim the IV Guard changes those numbers. The published evidence does not support that claim for any single dressing, and we would rather tell you that than sell against it.
On water exposure the CDC guideline is specific: do not submerge the catheter or catheter site in water, and permit showering only if precautions are taken to reduce the likelihood of introducing organisms, for example protecting the catheter and connecting device with an impermeable cover.1 MedSource describes the IV Guard's outer layer as waterproof, which supports that precaution, but a waterproof dressing does not replace the guideline. Per the manufacturer's instructions for use (document MSL-REG4.QP4-182, Rev. 04), the dressing is single use, is sterile unless the packaging is open or damaged, and should be replaced as required.4 Follow your agency's protocols, your medical direction, and the full instructions printed on the package.
