Are CodeCuffs considered a restraint?
No, not according to the manufacturer. Sav-A-Jake states that CodeCuffs are not designed for combative patients, that a conscious and alert patient can remove them, and that they are therefore not a restraint device. They are intended for unconscious or altered mental status patients who have lost control of their extremities. Federal hospital rules define a restraint broadly and then carve out protective devices, but where a given device lands is set by your agency and your medical director. Confirm it under your own protocol before carrying the product.
How do CodeCuffs secure a patient on a stretcher or a stair chair?
CodeCuffs handle the upper extremities only. Cot straps, spider straps, and body straps secure the torso and legs; CodeCuffs address the arms, the part that stays loose and flails during a move. The manufacturer's stated use is reducing arm movement while a patient is carried from the incident scene to the emergency department. On a stair chair, Sav-A-Jake notes the device also keeps a patient from grabbing handrails or walls and pulling the crew off balance. It replaces wrapping the wrists in gauze or tape.
Do CodeCuffs help keep an IV or IO from being pulled out during transport?

Prehospital line loss is measurable: in one published series of intubated pediatric trauma patients, 12.7 percent of prehospital IV cannulas were dislodged or malfunctioning at emergency department arrival. How do you clean CodeCuffs, and can you bleach nylon webbing?
Follow your agency's disinfection policy and the manufacturer's instructions for use. Sav-A-Jake describes CodeCuffs as easy to clean and very durable, but publishes no chemical compatibility list, no bleach dilution, and no laundering instructions, and we will not invent one. Bleach and other oxidizers can degrade nylon webbing over repeated exposures, so treat the cuffs as a wear item and inspect the webbing and the hook-and-loop closure before each use.
